Locs N' Chops - Orin Saunders
Orin Saunders was born in Guyana, South America. He migrated to America in 1973. In 1976, he was elected to the board of the Long Island Minority Alliance. At that time, this board was the largest community based organization in Nassau County that managed educational programs for at risk youth in high schools and community development organizations. As an active member of Unity Church of Hempstead from 1977 to 1994, he served in various capacities as a board member, Sunday school teacher, usher and caretaker.
Orin became president of the now defunct family owned business, Progressive Process Service from 1986 to1988. Orin then served as the bookkeeper of Kinapps African Groomers: a pioneering business model in the natural hair industry, from 1988 to 1993. In 1993, he co-founded Locks N Chops: a premier natural hair institution known for its education, service, entrepreneurship training, culture and fashion in the natural hair industry. Many of the current national and international acclaimed personalities in the natural hair community started their formal natural hair education in this institution. Locks N Chops standardized and brought into being such industry words as African Locks, Bantu Knots, Nubian Twist, Jazzy tracks, Cosmic Locs and Hair naturalist. Orin was acknowledged in the book ‘Men of Color’ as a person who has influence hair fashion in the 20th century. He is also featured as a model and contributor in the groundbreaking and highly praised all natural hair book ‘Authentic Hair’.
